Mikayla'a Media Corner #16

Hello! I am unabashedly a pop music enthusiast and this week I have a music recommendation for all my bedroom/alt pop lovers.

  • I am in love with Griff’s mini-album One Foot in Front of the Other and am especially enamored by the title track. Griff is a Jamaican-Chinese Brit that has catapulted onto the music scene during the past year, in part due to the overlap of Covid and the rise of bedroom pop. She wrote and recorded this mini-album during the pandemic and it is an appetizer to a proper debut album. Griff’s mini-album is seven tracks and 20 minutes of emotive vocals and contemplative lyrics. The instrumentals, beats, and production elements work in service of Griff’s vocals, emphasizing their emotional intent and creating a feeling in each song that fully encompasses the listener. Griff’s voice is the centerpiece but that doesn’t mean the other elements are lacking. The beats are interesting and the instrumentals are well placed, cohesive, and deliberate. Each track feels complete and balanced, full but not overwhelming. Beyond the sound, the lyrics are creative, raw, and intimate. Griff demonstrates a knack for storytelling, creating songs that are expressive and human. If the mini-album is a preview of what is to come, then I can’t wait for her full-length debut album.
