Mikayla's Media Corner #5

Hello! Last weekend, I succumbed to a deep Netflix-Hulu hole of movies and tv and I have picked a few of my favorites for you.

  • The Irregulars is about a ragtag group of street kids living in Victorian London. It’s inspired by the original group of Baker Street Irregulars that were featured in the Sherlock Holmes stories. The series follows five teens as they are recruited by Watson to solve supernatural mysteries. I found the main characters to be engaging and fun to watch as they ran around London. I loved watching Bea lead the team and keep both Sherlock and Watson in line. Overall, it was a fun watch and if you like supernatural mysteries or Sherlock Holmes I would give this a watch. • So, I do this thing with K-Dramas where I won’t start a drama until all the episodes are released. Last weekend, I finally watched the Netflix adaptation of the popular Webtoon Sweet Home and I loved it. Disclaimer, I have not watched the Webtoon. I know there are a lot of people who were disappointed by the adaptation, but for me it was captivating and I binged it in two days. Sweet Home follows a group of survivors after the world has entered a monster apocalypse where humans turn into monsters based on their greatest desire. The cast was great, the core group of survivors was compelling and multi-dimensional. I enjoyed learning about their backstories and cared about their wellbeing (except for the shop-owner he was a jerk). I liked how they paced the series and the way they revealed information about the virus. If you like the horror/post-apocalyptic/fantasy genre that questions human nature and government control, I would highly recommend Sweet Home. (Link to image)

  • Another week, another 00’s throwback. The 2008 teen classic Wild Child starring Emma Roberts is on Netflix. Wild Child was one of my favorite movies in middle school and watching it as an adult was still just as fun (plus, there is an added boost of nostalgia now). If you haven’t seen it, Wild Child follows spoiled rich girl Poppy as she gets shipped off to boarding school in England. This movie has every teen movie cliche, is jam-packed with sarcastic one-liners, centers around female friendship, and I love it. (Link to image)

  • Villains is a 2019 dark-comedy on Hulu that stars Bill Skarsgård and Maika Monroe as they break into a suburban home with seriously sadistic homeowners. It’s an indie-horror-thriller-comedy and is overall a solid film. My favorite part of the film was Monroe’s character, Jules. She made me like her character and root for her to survive. It was also the first time I watched Skarsgård act with his own face! Villains isn’t for everyone, but if you like dark indie horror comedies you’ll enjoy it. (Link to image)
